SURFACE FISHING – ADD A NEW DIMENSION TO YOUR FISHING ARSENAL… Surface fishing is all the craze at the moment and so it should be. It is one of the most intense and exciting types of fishing one can do and if you get it right and learn the correct tips and techniques on surface fishing, it’s a type of fishing that’s not only hellishly addictive but very rewarding as well. Over the next three issues we will be covering some basic tips and techniques on surface fishing, we’ll be hearing from some of the most recognised surface fisherman in the market at the moment and we’ll be covering the best brands of tackle for the specific type of surface fishing. We starting off the series with popping and in this article we have involved three well respected and accomplished anglers and they are Brad Arthur, Roy Skea of Jigstar Africa and Mick Clarke ‘The Codfather’. Brad Arthur kicks us off… Poppers are designed to catch surface feeding fish but the main target species for us here are GT’s and Tuna, although Dorado and Couta are often a welcome by-catch. Popping isn’t really as dependent on sea conditions as it is on fish in the area. I’ve taken fish on poppers in howling winds and complete glass-off days. If the fish are feeding then it’s a great way to catch them. Often that means that the most productive times are either early morning or late afternoon but I have taken fish all day on poppers before.
